Why don’t we blow Shofar Erev Rosh Hashana?
Dear Rabbi, Why don't we blow Shofar on the day before Rosh Hashanah? Is it to confuse Satan and make him think that Rosh Hashanah is over? The answer obviously needs some clarification. Does Satan lack a calendar? May we all have a good new Year.
Can repentance cancel one’s fate?
We know that everything is determined before a person is born in the world. If so, can a person change whatever was decreed upon him in advance during Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance? How does that happen?
A week that atones for the entire year
They say there is a week that can atone for the whole year. As far as I know, this week is in Elul. I would like to know on what day this week begins!
Fasting during Elul
Is it permissible to fast every day before Rosh Hashana? My husband has been fasting and I would like to know if it’s a good thing.

Women reciting Selichot at home
What should a woman who recites Selichot at home be careful about?
Torah study or Selichot?
I didn’t manage to say Selichot in the morning but I can say it at noon-time when I usually learn gemara. In the month of Elul, is it better to use the time to recite Selichot or to continue learning?
Viduy during Elul and on holidays
Can one recite Viduy (prayer for confessing sins) after midnight? During a festival?
The difference between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur
I’m all confused about Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. They say that Rosh Hashana is the day of judgment and Yom Kippur is the day for atoning of one’s sins. So why is it forbidden to pray and cry on Rosh Hashana that our sins be forgiven? What should we ask for on Rosh Hashana and what should we ask for on Yom Kippur?? What is the purpose of each day?
An Ashkenazi who has only a Sephardi minyan
I’m getting stronger religious-wise and I’m planning to go to Selichot. I live in a town where there is only a Sephardi synagogue but I’m an Ashkenazi. Do I have to go to Selichot the whole month of Elul like the Sephardim because I pray the Sephardi prayer version with them the whole week?
Selichot for women
Does a woman have to say Selichot during the month of Elul right before Rosh Hashana?
Ashkenazi or Sephardi Selichot?
I became religious a year ago. My first acquaintance with praying in a synagogue was in a Chabad synagogue, with the Tehillat Hashem prayerbook. I got attached to this prayer version and still pray with it today. But I would like to say Selichot like the Sephardim do. What should I do?
Fasting over one’s sins
In the past I did immoral sins, but now I married a worthy woman and accepted upon myself to avoid sinning in the future, expressed regret, and confessed my sin. Is that enough for my sins to be forgiven or do I have to accept all kinds of extreme measures as mentioned in the holy books, like fasting during a night and a day, redeeming myself with money especially during Elul, the Ten Days of Repentance and the 8 weeks beginning with the week when they read Shemot? Or maybe my sins were forgiven already?
Reciting psalm 27 during Elul
I know that you’re supposed to recite psalm 27 from the month of Elul until after Simchat Torah. 1. Can one recite it early in the morning before the morning blessings? 2. Should we recite it also on Shabbat?
Ashkenazi or Sephardi Selichot
My father’s family is from Poland and my mother’s family are 12 generations in Israel, probably Sephardi. I became religious and go to Sephardi synagogues. I am single. Which customs and halachos should I keep? Sephardi or Ashkenazi? One way or the other in all the laws?? What should I do for Elul?
Why focus on repentance only during Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance?
I’m bothered by something that I see repeating itself every year. The month of Elul comes and especially the Ten Days of Repentance and everyone tries to be “big tzaddikim”, getting up early to pray and saying Selichot, learn Torah scrupulously, give a lot of charity, and in general trying to become a better Jew (me too), but what happens during the rest of the year? Of what use is “repenting” for 40 days if there is no continuation to my improvements during the rest of the year? Why can’t we continue being good for the rest of the year too?
Taking a vacation during Elul
My friends and I were thinking of organizing a vacation during Elul. Is there any problem with doing that?
Selichot for Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance
Are the Selichot that the Sephardim say during the Ten Days of Repentance the same Selichot that they say in Elul?
Visiting a cemetery on the day before the first of Elul
We have a custom to visit the deceased family members on the day before the first of Elul. 1. Is this a law or just a custom? 2. Can a woman come? 3. Should one come if otherwise there won’t be a minyan to recite Kaddish? 4. Does this help the deceased?
