Wearing gold jewelry on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

Pergunta

Is there anything wrong with wearing gold jewelry on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur? I heard that we shouldn’t do it to avoid recalling the sin of the Golden Calf. Is that true?

Resposta

1. . You can wear gold jewelry on Rosh Hashana without a problem.
2. On Yom Kippur - one shouldn’t wear white clothes with gold trimmings, because white clothes hint to atonement (as is written in Isaiah 1:18: “If your sins will be as red as scarlet, they will become white”). Trimming them with gold recalls the sin of the Golden Cal.
But gold jewelry which is not part of a garment has no aspect of atonement. One need not be concerned that necklaces, bracelets and rings, glasses and gold watches etc. will recall the sin of the Golden Calf.
Nevertheless, because of our “trepidation of judgment,” no man or woman should put on any ornaments besides the ones they always wear during the weekdays and should avoid wearing special ornaments they wear on Shabbat and the festivals. (See Mishna Berura 610:16, and Piskei Tshuvot ibid.:5.
